It looks like my days as an intern here at AKHIA are winding down. The time went very fast, and I can’t believe I’m about to enter my final year of college, ever. There’s a lot to be said about what I can take away from my internship. I feel extremely lucky to have worked here at AKHIA, and I’ve learned so much … about myself mostly.

My first couple of days here at AKHIA, I was pretty nervous. I had no idea what I was really going to be getting into work-wise. But once I started actually being assigned work and getting it done, I thought, “I know this stuff, I know these programs, I have the skills I need for this career,” which was a big relief. The first thing you need to remember when you first get to your internship, or even your first job, is to trust yourself. You’ve learned the skills you need for your career choice. We are all nervous on our first day, but we must remember that we DO actually know what we’re doing. That’s why we’ve made it this far.

Another thing to remember is to take it all in. There’s a reason you’re doing an internship. Whether it was your decision or it’s required for you to graduate, you are here to learn what it’s actually like out in the field. To me, being in an internship was invaluable. We all know that the projects we work on in school, while teaching us what we need to know, aren’t going to be exactly like the real world. Interacting with clients is crucial. So after an internship, it won’t be as big of a shock when you start a full-time job.

And my last bit of advice, although it sounds cliché, is to just be you. The best thing you can really do during your interview and throughout the course of your internship is be who you are.  I’ve been very lucky to intern at a place like AKHIA and I feel that I fit very well into its culture. I appreciate what AKHIA does for their employees, and you have the freedom to really be who you are as a person, which in turn makes you be a better employee and produce better work.

Although I am very sad that my internship is coming to an end, I have learned so much from all the wonderful people here and, quite frankly, had a great time! I can’t thank AKHIA enough and all the people I worked with for letting me be part of the AKHIA world and culture for a summer. It means a lot to me.

What did you learn from your summer internship or job?
