My name is Amanda Azzarelli and I am so happy to be here! I will be spending the last semester of my senior year as AKHIA’s Account Services Intern. To introduce myself, I would like to rewind a little bit and share with you how Kent State led me to AKHIA.
I arrived at Kent State with no idea of what I wanted to be when I “grew up,” but I was excited and optimistic for the future. I ended up in Communication Studies on a whim; I didn’t know much about the program, but it seemed like a good fit because I loved to write and enjoyed talking to people. I declared my major in Public Communication and got excited to see what college would have in store for me. Luckily, I fit into Communication Studies even better than I imagined. As a sophomore, my advisor encouraged me to pick up a minor to fill some of my elective credits. Feeling a bit ambitious, I decided to tack on minors in both Interpersonal Communication and Organizational Communication. I entered into junior year with a third minor in Public Relations.
Some professionals from AKHIA spoke to one of my PR classes, and the presentation really stuck with me. I went home after class and pulled up the AKHIA website, thinking about how cool it would be to work there some day. Later that year, I was excited to see AKHIA in attendance at the YouToo Social Media Conference. These interactions made me interested in learning more about the agency.
My mind immediately jumped back to AKHIA when I was assigned to conduct an informational interview with a public relations professional at the start of my senior year. I had submitted my resume for consideration for the agency’s internship program, and I was really eager to finally check out the place I had become so curious about. This informational interview confirmed to me that AKHIA was just as cool as I imagined it to be. The vibrant walls and interesting décor made the building feel different from any other office I had been in, and all of the friendly faces passing by made me feel welcome.
A few months later, after a couple interviews and another exciting trip to the AKHIA office, I eagerly accepted the Account Services Intern position! I have already learned so much in just my first week in the office, and I can see that working in an agency like this will combine the skills I have learned in my major and minors. I know that my experiences at Kent State led me here for a reason. I am so excited to take everything in and attempt to figure out where I belong in the professional world. Spending my last semester learning from the professionals at AKHIA seems like the perfect way to finish up my academic career!
